Licences for marriages to be performed in the Province of Ontario are available from the Clerk’s office, reception desk.
Applicants are encouraged to contact the office well in advance of the intended date of marriage to review the requirements for obtaining a licence.
Licences are issued only to the applicant and/or joint applicant, by appointment only, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Please call the Licence Issuer at 905-945-9634 to arrange an appointment. Please leave a message on the general mailbox ext. 2170 if needed to book your appointment. Your call will be returned as soon as possible.
Both parties must sign the completed marriage licence application.
At least one party to the marriage must apply in person.
The following Identification for both parties, whether present or not, is required: original birth certificate, any change of name certificates, current passport, record of immigration or Canadian citizenship card PLUS photo identification for both parties.
One of the applicants may apply in person for the Marriage Licence, but must have the proper identification for the absent applicant.
If your birth certificate or current passport, or other identification is in a foreign language, a written translation of the document is required. This can be done by a person who is fluent in the language and is not related to either person applying for the marriage licence, or by a company that provides translation services. A list of such companies can be found in the Yellow Pages of the telephone book under "Translators & Interpreters." The person providing the translation must complete an Affidavit that is sworn before a Commissioner of Oaths or Notary Public proving the authenticity of the translation.
DIVORCE: Applicants granted a divorce within Canada must provide the original or court-certified copy of the Decree Absolute or Certificate of Divorce from the court where the divorce was granted. The documents will be inspected and returned to the applicant(s) prior to issuance of the licence. Please note that a Decree Nisi, Divorce Order, or Divorce Judgment is not acceptable proof of divorce. If a divorce was granted outside Canada, additional documentation must be provided, and it may take 4 weeks or longer to obtain a marriage licence. The necessary forms may be obtained from the Clerk’s Office.
MINORS: You must be at least 18 years old to be married in Ontario without authorization or parental consent. Applicants 16 or 17 years of age may marry with the consent in writing of both parents. Consent of Parent or Guardian to Marriage (Form 6) must be completed and signed by both parents. Please contact our office for further information.
WIDOW / WIDOWER: If you are a widow or a widower, the City does not require proof of death of your former spouse.
Licence fee is $100.00 cash or debit card. Personal cheques are not accepted

A marriage licence is valid anywhere in the Province of Ontario for a period of three (3) months from the date of issue.
Marriage ceremonies are not performed at Town Hall. A list of clergy is available upon request.

The marriage licence application form MUST BE SIGNED BY BOTH INDIVIDUALS.
The completed application along with the 14 digit number must be submitted in person to the Clerk’s Office by at least one of the applicants with the supporting documents for both applicants noted below. The Marriage Licence will be issued the same day usually in 5 - 10 minutes.
